Enrichment Activities
We plan a wide variety of enrichment experiences for our children. Sometimes these are based on their current interests (to extend learning), sometimes they are based on igniting new interests (introducing new learning), and sometimes they are based on developing the Nursery School as being part of the wider community.
The children travel on foot, by public bus, train, taxi and minibus!
Here are a few examples:
- Swimming lessons at Woodhouse Close Leisure Centre
- Visits to Woodhouse Close library
- Cooking activities; making fruit salad, porridge, pancakes – developing sense of family/group and learning about different foods
- Visits to Auckland Palace – Graduation, picnic in the park, food festivals, carol singing at Christmas
- Visits to farms – learning about animals and farming
- Links with local churches – Harvest celebration, Nativity, church projects including Advent Windows
- Christmas party
- Visit to see Santa
- Shopping at local shops – making lists, mathematics, involvement in the community
- Special days – stay and play sessions, teddy bears’ picnic, Easter egg hunt,
- Art projects with King James Academy
- Work with Auckland Project (Heritage Award for mining project – July 2019)
- Visits to Bishop Auckland establishments – Gregory’s, Wilson’s vets, carol singing at Auckland Palace, sensory room at Family Centre; Winter Wonderland at Auckland Youth and Community Centre
- Annual family seaside trip
- Visits to places of interest e.g. Bowes Museum, Hancock Museum, Hullabaloo children’s theatre, Beamish Museum, Shildon Railway Museum,
- Visitors in school e.g. dentist, Zoo lab, Animals About Town
- Hatching butterflies
These activities provided a different dimension to children’s usual experiences whilst also providing a vehicle to strengthen links with parents, carers and families.
